The saying that doing good (l1ikii) is a good act is one oE the popular (ma,fbhür) maxims held by ordinary people. But if one transcends this proverbiallevel and examines the justification for its truth (I;aqiqati), one encounters conditions of which one should take notice. One must say, first of all, that doing good is of two kinds. One of these is doing good without any ulterior consideration, and the other is doing good wilEul1y (khwäst). We have stated that the good coming from the condition oE doing good wilfully according to an intention is indeed good, but that the intention is due to imperfection (naqf). The perfeet good, however, is good done by hirn who does nothing but good and does this independently of circumstances (taklif), not for a reason.3
