Security Best Practices

Quentin Docter · 2018

This chapter contains practical advice, as well as scenarios to help users understand preventive measures, what to look for in regard to suspicious activity, and what to do in case one's system becomes compromised. Software applications, particularly operating systems, are incredibly complex. Even with great programmers and security mechanisms in place, operating systems have vulnerabilities. Antivirus software attempts to identify virus infections by scanning all of the files on users' hard disk or a subset of files that are most likely to contain viruses. Popular antivirus programs include Norton Security and McAfee Total Protection. Anti-spyware applications look for known spyware and adware programs and offer to disable them or remove them from users' system.
