Filtering Effects

Jean-Michel Réveillac · 2018

Filters can be used to cut, eliminate, boost or modify regions or frequency bands of arbitrary width in an audio signal. There are four large families of filtering effects: high-pass filters; low-pass filters; band-pass filters; and band-stop filters or band-rejection filters. Crossover filters are primarily used within multichannel systems, as well as for certain specialized types of audio processing. Auto-wah also known as T-wah, Q-wah or an envelope filter, is most commonly used with guitars, much like its close relative, the wah-wah pedal, although it can of course also be used with other instruments. There is a vast diversity in the nature and applications of filtering effects, which are used for purposes ranging from audio signal equalization to guitar effects and sound reproduction. There are several kinds of equalizer: graphic equalizers; parametric equalizers; semiparametric equalizers; band-stop equalizers or notch equalizers; linear phase equalizers; and dynamic equalizers.
