Computer Databases

Anita Crafts-Lighty · 1986

Computers have tremendous information processing capabilities and, therefore, make it possible to store and retrieve large collections of data very quickly. These computer databases have become a very useful public source of information during the last ten years. They are particularly well established in scientific subjects. For the benefit of readers who are unfamiliar with computerized searching, a brief introduction is appropriate. There is, however, an extensive literature on this topic and some suggestions for further reading and a selection of useful reference books are given in Appendix 8–1 at the end of this chapter.
