There is considerable controversy as to whether or not aging has deleterious effects on language, particularly at a discourse or text level. A number of studies have documented age-related changes in quantity and quality of discourse information retained whereas other studies have found minimal differences across age groups (Craik and Rabinowitz, 1984; Dixon, Hultsch, Simon, and von Eye, 1984; Hartley, 1988; Hultsch and Dixon, 1984).
