Proceeding of the 2013 workshop on Cellular networks: operations, challenges, and future design
Suman Banerjee, Li Erran Erran Li · 2013
It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2013 ACM MobiSys Workshop on on Cellular Networks: Operations, Challenges, and Future Design (CellNet). This is the second instance of this workshop and continues the tradition started in 2012. CellNet'13 consists of multiple paper presentations, two invited keynote talks, and a panel. The goal of this workshop is to enable a better dialogue between practitioners and researchers in the domain of cellular networks. The need for this event stems from a gap between these two communities. With the popularity of smartphones and tablets, we are living in an increasingly mobile world. Third-party mobile applications are rapidly growing everyday and greatly enrich our lives. The ecosystem for mobile applications is vibrant and conducive to open innovation. An important part of this ecosystem is the underlying connectivity provided by a cellular network. While innovations in mobile services and applications have thrived, innovations in the underlying cellular systems are much more limited. This is partially caused by the closed and monolithic nature of these networks, where the core design and operational challenges of these networks are not very accessible to the research community. The goal of this workshop is to bring together network operators, and academic researchers together to discuss emerging problems, challenges, and potential solutions in this domain.
