Automated Lathes

Automated machine tools have played an important role in increasing production rates and enhancing product quality. Especially, automated lathes are high-speed machines, and therefore, the application of safety rules in their operation is obligatory for all attendants and servicing personnel. The operator of a nonautomated machine performs the handling or auxiliary operations. Fully automatic lathes are those machines on which workpiece (WP) handling and the cutting activities are performed automatically. The production of a WP on an automatic machine represents a symphonic master work in which different instruments contribute in harmony to compose or produce the work in a predetermined playing or cycle time. The machine is the orchestra; the contributors of the work are the process engineer, the cam designer, and the machine setter. The cam design for automatics is tedious work including definite steps depending on the type of automatic machine.
