Driven by the ever-increasing user connectivity demands, emerging and future generations of IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi, such as Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ac and WiGig CERTIFIED, will be capable of achieving multiple gigabits per second speeds and be used to do everything from simple web browsing and peer-to-peer sharing, to multimedia streaming, real-time teleconferencing, cable replacement, and wireless docking, to name a few. Coupled with the recent introduction of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint by the Wi-Fi Alliance, users can further enjoy seamless and secure connectivity when roaming between cellular and Wi-Fi and between Wi-Fi networks. This Feature Topic aims at providing a timely and concise reference to the state-of-the-art, the latest research findings, and the future directions of Wi-Fi technologies. Further, it aims at addressing key technical challenges in design and implementation, as well as providing a unique insight into the emerging and novel applications and services of future Wi-Fi.
