Abstract Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary area between biology and computer science. One of the major goals of bioinformatics is to develop methods and tools for analyzing huge amounts of biological data, including genomic sequences, protein structures, and gene expression data, whereas another major goal of bioinformatics is to discover new biological knowledge using such kinds of tools. We focus on the former goal and review important computational problems and computational techniques for solving these problems. In particular, we explain the following topics: pairwise and multiple sequence alignment, hidden Markov models and their applications to bioinformatics, protein structure prediction, kernel methods for bioinformatics, and analysis of gene expression patterns.
