The magnetism of pottery

There appears to be an intrinsic anisotropy in the thermoremanent magnetism (TRM) of baked clay. Work at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology at Oxford ( Nature 1979 277 644) suggests a preferential alignment of the magnetic grains in moulding, which is enhanced by grain growth during firing, as a possible cause.
