Model‐Driven Specification and Validation of Congestion Control Transport Mechanisms and Functions

Ernesto Expósito · 2012

The chapter describes the design, evaluation and validation of a standard congestion control transport function based on a TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) specification. The chapter first discusses the design of a basic congestion control function based on error detection and notification mechanisms and composed of a rate-based congestion control avoidance mechanism. The standard IETF TFRC specification has been completely specified and used to validate the design. Several case studies have been simulated, including application with and without time constraints. In the case of applications without time constraints, the congestion control function has been validated, as the mechanisms perform as expected. In the case of time-constrained applications, several cases where the congestion control function was not able to offer a service compliant with the application requirements were detected. This is due to the non-QoS-aware nature of the rate control mechanism proposed by the TFRC congestion control function.
