Preface The present volume of Journal of Physics: Conference Series contains selected papers of the 3 rd Padjadjaran International Physics Symposium (PIPS 2017) held on November 14-15, 2017 in Bandung, Indonesia. PIPS 2017 is organized by the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran. PIPS 2017 aimed to improve communication among researchers in the field of physics and related fields for their contribution to the role of physics in sustainable development. About 90 researchers from six countries have participated and shared experiences on the development and progress of physics and its applications. After the peer-reviewed process, 51 papers covering a wide range of theoretical physics, material sciences, computational, instrumentation, nuclear physics, earth sciences and energy are accepted for publication in this volume.
