Inflectional Paradigms

James P. Blevins · 2015

This chapter presents some dominant conceptions of paradigms that have been developed in different morphological traditions, identifies the kinds of elements that have been organized into paradigms, and contrasts alternative notions of paradigmatic structure. A summary of the types of relations that have been argued to require reference to a notion of paradigms leads into a review of recent applications of information theory to the problem of modelling the implicational structure of paradigms. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the role that implicational relations play, explicitly in conceptions of paradigmatic structure, and implicitly in general assumptions about the demarcation and organization of inflectional systems.
