Copper Physical Layers

Wael William Diab, Howard M. Frazier · 2011

This chapter describes the evolution of Ethernet physical layer (PHY) specifications for operation on twisted pair cabling, and process that was used to select the modulation techniques in the Ethernet in the First Miles (EFM) copper PHYs. It presents the rationale for including two distinct copper PHYs, 10PASS-TS and 2BASE-TL, each addressing a set of perceived needs. The chapter explores the working relationship between the IEEE 802.3ah EFM task force and various Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) standards bodies. It then examines the details of the architecture of the EFM copper PHYs, describing the various sublayers and interfaces. The chapter also explores the functionality of Physical coding sublayer (PCS) and Transmission Convergence (TC) sublayer, with particular attention paid to the new functions that were introduced in EFM, including MAC-PHY rate matching, loop aggregation, and 64B/65B encoding. It concludes with an overview of the PHY management capabilities. Controlled Vocabulary Terms digital subscriber lines; IEEE 802.3 Standards; telecommunication network management
