Instructional Strategies for the Problems of Novice Programmers

What makes something hard to learn, and what can we do about it? Those two questions arise again and again for particular subject matters and parts of subject matters. For example, precise use of English syntax or the writing of a wellorganized essay are chronic trouble spots in the language arts. The understanding of fractions or the solving of algebra word problems are enterprises that confuse generation after generation of students. But it is by no means the case that most children find most of English or mathematics unmanageable. On the contrary, the larger part of the school population muddles through elementary English and math well enough.
