Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack has an alarming impact in this digital world. The Internet services may get troubled due to this DDoS attack. There are various reports of DDoS attacks which indicate that it is very harmful for user as well as for web services provided by server. Sometimes attacker even implements DDoS attack to steal the information from the server. Under such situation, utilization of puzzles for protection against DDoS attacks may prove very useful. Puzzles are the cryptographical solution for protecting the users and web servers from the possible DDoS attacks. Hence, this chapter targets protection against DDoS attacks by various puzzle-oriented methodologies such as client puzzle, cryptographic puzzle, and software puzzle. A comparative study of various puzzle schemes against protection of DDoS attack is also presented.
