Adaptive beamforming

Allan O. Steinhardt, B.D. Van Veen · International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing · 1989

Abstract An adaptive beamformer is a system devised to isolate a desired signal from interfering signals which are spatially disparate but which occupy the same spectral band. Traditionally these systems have been employed primarily in sonar and radar. However, because of the rise in traffic throughout the electromagnetic spectrum, coupled with the availability of high‐speed real‐time computational resources, adaptive beamforming is now increasingly of interest in wireless communications as well. In this overview we present the principles underlying these devices with an emphasis on estimation and system theoretic issues.
