Wireless Personal Area Networks: Protocols and Applications

Khaled A. Ali, Hussein Talaat Mouftah · 2017

This chapter contains a tutorial-oriented description of Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) systems such as Bluetooth and ZigBee networks. This tutorial is based on the WPAN standards of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) and the IEEE 802.15 Working Group. Such standards define the network architecture, the physical layer, and the medium access control (MAC) sublayer of the WPAN systems. The chapter explains the Bluetooth network architecture and protocols. It presents the IEEE high data rate WPAN system architecture and protocols, followed by a study for the IEEE low data rate WPAN system architecture and protocols. The chapter provides a comprehensive study for a selected number of WPAN-enhanced MAC protocols. WPANs are designed with a wide vision of applications ranging from low-rate communication systems capable of communicating information of data rates. A Bluetooth network is composed of a number of electronic devices communicate over a wireless transmission channel through a well-defined set of protocols.
