2001: Bad news, and good [Spectral Lines]

Even before 11 September, the outlook for 2001 was not exactly rosy. We were already worried about the collapse of the "new" economy and dot.com businesses, the dramatic destabilization of old-line concerns like AT&T and other telcos, massive corporate downsizings, and the downsizing of our retirement accounts.
