Image Makers

Larry A. Witham · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2006

This chapter examines the importance of the image of Christian ministry in clergy recruitment. It describes the case of Robert K. Johnson and Gregory Elmer who experienced the call to ministry after watching the 1964 film Becket. It also discusses the fall of televangelists in the late 1980s which resulted in the significant dip of the clergy profession. These cases illustrate how the image of clergy can both expand their calling, on the one hand, and broadcast their faults on the other.
