Software Quality Analysis Techniques

Root cause analysis (RCA) is one of the most important analysis procedures to drive development process improvement efforts. There are many tools and techniques that can be used for RCA. This chapter covers the powerful and more commonly used methods. Adequate staff participation is important with all the root-cause techniques. The 5 Whys is an iterative technique for identifying the underlying root cause for any given defect. Cause and effect diagrams are effective for discovering the root cause of a defect. Pareto charts are typically used to identify either the most commonly occurring categories of defects or the most common root causes of defects. There are various ways to estimate the effort required to develop a software project. Some common project facets to count include estimated lines of code, number of requirements, and number of function points. The accuracy of the effort estimation will improve as the input data becomes more accurate.
