Major data breaches leak millions of user records
Computer Fraud & Security · 2013
Researchers at Trustwave SpiderLabs managed to get access to a command and control (C&C) server used by a botnet created with a variant of the Pony malware and discovered a database of over two million stolen login credentials for services such as Facebook, Yahoo and Google. Other information harvested by the bots from infected machines included credentials for email, FTP, SSH and remote desktop logins. The server was based in the Netherlands but many of the victims appear to be users of Russian-language sites, although data was acquired from a total of 102 countries.
