How to test the readiness of open-source cloud computing solutions

Chaowei Yang, Qunying Huang · 2013

This chapter introduces how to test and compare the readiness of three open-source cloud computing solutions, including Eucalyptus, CloudStack, and OpenNebula. 14.1 INTRODUCTION The objective of this chapter is to test the readiness of open-source solutions in supporting the NIST cloud computing characteristics and computing requirements for geosciences. The test matrix includes performance, usability, costs, and characterizations of the solutions. Initially, three cloud solutions are selected for the test: Eucalyptus, Cloudstack, and OpenNebula. Factors determining the selection of the open-source solutions include: (i) maturity of the solutions, (ii) availability of an opensource version, (iii) cost of the enterprise edition, (iv) size of the user community, and (v) any publicly available quality indication (market share, feedback of customers, and others). Tables 14.1 and 14.2 summarize our ndings including the key customers of the cloud solutions, feedback from the community on the maturity of the solutions, installation complexities, availabilities of an open-source version, and cost. Supported Operating Systems (OS) for physical machines and virtual machines (VMs) are also listed.
