Internet-based virtual private networks (VPN) are suitable for a variety of applications, including remote access. Among the other applications of Internet-based VPNs are secure World Wide Web hosting, data warehousing, and video and voice conferencing between corporate locations. An Internet-based VPN can even be used to implement extranets between trading partners for such applications as Electronic Data Interchange. There are several proprietary and standard ways to implement Internet-based VPNs. Among the vendor-provided solutions are the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, the Layer 2 Forwarding protocol, and the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol. In the development of its Dynamic VPN Switching product line, Assured Digital Inc., for example, set out with the goal of making it quick and easy for network managers to implement and manage secure VPN solutions for any type of business application over any type of access mode. VPNet Technologies Inc. offers a variety of VPN products that provide flexible configuration alternatives for large enterprises, small businesses, and remote offices.
