Critical research directions in programming languages
ACM SIGPLAN Notices · 1989
BackgroundThis workshop assembled a small number of active researchers and knowledgeable observers in the areas of programming language (PL) requirements, specification, design, implementation, and effective use.The two-day gathering had the near-term impetus of laying the groundwork for a proposed five-year initiative in PLs, under consideration by ONR.Projections and recommendations beyond this five year horizon were also sought. In particular, the attendees were asked to:1. Assess the present state of the art in language design, implementation and effective use, and 2. Articulate vital research directions meriting special resources, to leverage the most promising new and anticipated developments in PLs and associated software systems. Workshop OrganizationThe workshop was structured into five areas wherein new advances were estimated by the organizers to be most needed or promising. In each area, a sample set of key words and phrases were selected a priori to launch the discussion:• Session A: Concurrency --parallelism, distributed computing, control of determinacy.
