Protocols, Protocol Stack Developments, and Testing

Rajib Taid · 2021

This chapter begins with the basics and typical components of a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) technical specification (TS) based on which the requirement specifications shall be derived for a particular protocol layer and its network element. It presents the layer-to-layer as well as a peer-to-peer method of communications between protocol layers and different message formats used by the air interface Non-access Stratum layer, Layer 2, Layer 3, and core network protocols layers. A 3GPP TS describes the various aspects of a protocol layer. A 3GPP TS contains section(s) called “Procedure” for each of the functionalities or procedures supported by a particular protocol layer. Mobile communications radio air interface Layer 3 is one of the most interesting layers in all the cellular systems that are available today. Data communication protocols such as the TCP and UDP work in the connection-oriented and connectionless modes, that is, Acknowledged and Unacknowledged.
