Analyzing and Interpreting the Subtraction Running Record
Nicki Newton · 2016
Analyzing Part I is important to go through the record and look at each column. Part II is going to give us a deeper look at how the student is thinking about the problems. This is where we are going to ask the probing questions that make the student&s;s thinking visible. Strategies are developmental, and many argue that students pass through the stages, getting more sophisticated with practice over time and maturity, however, some 5th graders are still stuck using counting strategies. Students can be in a mastery stage for one set of facts and a counting on stage for another set of facts. Sometimes students will say some of the problems that they got wrong were easy. After analyzing the data, it is time to interpret the data and think about the instructional implications. It is important that the small guided math group and the workstation practice work is specific and targeted to the needs of the students.
