Background and History

Wael William Diab, Howard M. Frazier · 2011

The IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC) is the world's most renowned and influential entity in setting voluntary, consensus-based standards for computer networks. This chapter gives a historical perspective on the IEEE, its successful 802 LMSC, and its extraordinary 802.3 (Ethernet) Working Group. It discusses some of the stellar milestones that have been reached in the course of developing the IEEE 802.3 standard. The IEEE 802 LMSC consists of several groups, each of which is designated by a decimal number following the 802 project designation. There are three types of standing committees that exist under 802: the sponsor Executive Committee (EC), working groups (WGs) and technical advisory groups (TAGs). The IEEE 802.3 Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) Working Group, Ethernet, has enjoyed wide success in the networking world. The chapter concludes by introducing Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) as part of the Ethernet standard. Controlled Vocabulary Terms Ethernet networks; IEEE 802.3 Standards
