Analysis and Comparison of Automated Scoring Approaches: Addressing Evidence-Based Assessment Principles

2006

This book presents a variety of approaches to automated scoring for computerbased assessments. In this chapter, our task is to try and compare among the various approaches, giving our consideration to strengths and weaknesses. In order to do so, we need to adopt a common perspective on how assessments function. For this purpose, we will use the principles of the Berkeley Assessment and Evaluation Research (BEAR) Assessment System (Wilson & Sloane, 2000). These principles place evidence-centered ideas in a practitioner&s;s context, and consider what the role and range of assessment evidence can and should be.
