Synthesis Types

Andrew Rushton · 2011

This chapter explains how to use all of IEEE synthesis types using a very-high speed integrated circuits programme (VHSIC) hardware description language (VHDL)-1993-based synthesiser. Designs written this way will be compatible with the VHDL-2008 versions of the packages when they become available. The chapter focuses on the packages such as package std_logic_1164, package numeric_std, package fixed_pkg and package float_pkg that are commonly used, available for use in a wide range of synthesis tools and that provide a coherent set of types. Type conversions can be classed as bit-preserving or value-preserving. Constant values of synthesis types can be represented by string values or by bit-string values. The operators in the synthesis packages have been defined so that it is possible to mix the array types with type integer. Controlled Vocabulary Terms hardware description languages; IEEE standards; very high speed integrated circuits
