Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the World Wide Web (WWW), realized the inadequacies of current Web technologies and subsequently strived to make the Web more intelligent. His goal was to have a Web that will essentially free humans from the burden of having to integrate disparate information sources as well as to carry out extensive searches. He then came to the conclusion that one needs machineunderstandable Web pages and the use of ontologies for information integration. This resulted in the notion of the semantic Web [LEE01]. The Web services that take advantage of semantic Web technologies are semantic Web services.
