Architecture Assessment

Architecture assessment methods assess the quality of an architecture. The chapter presents an architecture assessment method, the architecture tradeoff analysis method (ATAM), which is based on a structured communication process to incorporate all relevant stakeholders and viewpoints. It focuses on the main important aspects, incorporates stakeholders to strengthen the decisions and provides a replicable documentation of the arguments for and against the decisions. ATAM mainly considers three aspects: the goals of the system and the business around the system; the quality requirements that meets the goals; and the architecture that satisfies the quality requirements. The business goals address the concerns of the developer and vendor of the VMT. A growth scenario describes expected changes in the near future, for instance, an increased number of tourists who use the VMT.
