Causatives

Jae Jung Song · 2015

This chapter presents an exhaustive discussion of Korean causatives but it provides an informed introduction to the topic by dealing with a range of descriptive facts and theoretical issues discussed in the literature. The three types of causative, lexical, morphological, and syntactic, are illustrated. The chapter has also examined Korean causatives briefly from a cross-linguistic perspective. With large-scale corpora widely available, it may now be possible to investigate some of the properties and theoretical issues discussed in this chapter against naturally occurring data. For instance, the correlation between the case marking of the causee NP, and the causee's control or affectedness can be tested against corpus data in order to assess the validity, or to ascertain the extent, of that correlation. Similarly, corpus data can be examined to determine under what circumstances structural or otherwise doubling in causatives takes place.
