Fingerprint-based indoor sensing : technology and commercialization

Wing Lun Mar · 2018

Indoor location-based service (ILBS) is an important element for the development of a smart city. This is evident from the fact that the commercial sector has been taking an active role in its development by the acquisition of and investment in related businesses. This thesis focuses on one of the major branches in ILBS, indoor people sensing. Through the case of a start-up, P-sense, founded by us, this thesis (1) examines the design and deployment of sensing system, and discusses tools for data filtering and visualization; (2) examines available algorithms used to recover users’ trajectories and understand user trajectories; (3) discusses concerns regarding data privacy of people sensing in compliance with HKSAR’s regulations; and (4) documents and explores the commercialization process of ILBS by P-Sense. Our case of P-Sense has demonstrated its commercial viability and showed that further research in accuracy improvement, handling of randomized MAC addresses and location data analytics could be commercially rewarding.
