Processes in pulse-forming networks are under consideration. It is shown that securing a desired pulse form in those networks is the main problem. To assess this pulse form, the authors propose to use computer simulation in Matlab environment. This simulation approach has shown that a homogenous pulse-forming network has significant overshoots of the voltage and some unwanted oscillations on the top of the pulse. It is proposed to introduce a resistor connected in parallel with the first inductance of the network to flatten the top of the pulse. A computer model of the pulse-forming network with this damping resistor is developed. This computer model has allowed the authors to establish the optimal value of the resistor, which is 5 times the values of the network characteristic impedance. The resulting form of the pulse for this optimal resistor value clearly indicates that the maximum magnitude of the fluctuations relative to the pulse amplitude has decreased around four times. This reduction can be important when the load of the pulse-forming network is a power amplifier with significant phase-amplitude dependence. The proposed improved pulse-forming network can be used in power modulators in those telecommunication installations where strict demands for phase and frequency deviations of the transmitted signal exist.
