Foreshortening
Thomas Paul Thesen · 2022
To create true foreshortening, the full form in perspective is unavoidable, and there is no shortcut in mimicking depth. Seeing every single element of the body in perspective requires a visual thought process that is very accurate and precise in the space-occupying form of the character. Drawing this requires a certain amount of expertise and practice of form. The simplified wireframe projection onto the forms helps to render them in their perspective correctly. Having this kind of image in the head and projecting it onto the character will make it much easier to draw the overlapping forms, which can be separated into several segments for further simplification. Foreshortening can be enhanced through the line quality and thickness, the different textures of the staggered segments, light and shadow, or the contrast between the foreground and background.
