AODV is a lightweight routing protocol for ad hoc networks, but there are some faults such as not considering the energy consumption of nodes and frequent flooding when it is used in WSN. In order to make up for its shortcomings, an modified AODV protocol is designed by introducing the idea of ant colony algorithm. It provides multiple optional routes, reduces the flooding probability, and can protect low-power nodes, which is more suitable for WSN networks. Simulation results show that the modified AODV protocol reduces the energy consumption of nodes, prolongs the life of nodes, and effectively improves the stability and communication efficiency of the network.
