The jigsaw puzzles are one of the interesting brain exercises from the century of mid-seventeenth. Researchers have been trying worldwide to develop automated and time-effective reconstruction algorithms to solve these puzzles. In this paper, we focus on the evolution of these algorithms which have been challenging in solving not only the conventional but also the complicated jigsaw puzzles. This paper provides groundwork on how the characteristics like shape, color, and square pieces are being used during the evolution process of jigsaw puzzle algorithms and gives a perspective on why we should further develop these algorithms with unsupervised learning and Deep learning algorithms.
