Comparative Analysis of Blockchain-Based Consensus Algorithms for Suitability in Critical Internet of Things Infrastructures

The Internet of Things (IoT) generates a significant amount of critical and private data, which demands the adoption of robust security solutions. Most IoT architectures are centralized, which compromises the basic confidentiality-integrity-availability triad. Blockchain technology (BChT) is a recent addition to the IoT’s security problems. In a blockchain (BCN) network, each user contributes the devices’ computational power and storage resources for the network to function. The records cannot be easily forged in a BCN network as every transaction is verified using a consensus algorithm (CA). CAs validate the transactions for updating the BCN network. However, the IoT’s computational and communication capabilities are limited by scarce resources, making it challenging to apply a conventional CA to the IoT. Cross-domain cross-consensus adds to the difficulty.
