Need for Lightweight Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) for Cloud-Based IoT

Keerti Naregal, Vijay H. Kalmani · Apple Academic Press eBooks · 2022

Cloud computing has been responsible for the availability of resources on demand. Cloud is used for various services, to store data, for design and developing of applications, and so on. Attribute based encryption (ABE) has been one of the encryption techniques widely used in cloud applications due its nature of providing access control to small chunks of data. We find that there has been increase in the use of IoT devices in the last decade and proportionally also the applications using cloud. Many IoT devices are likely to use cloud for their data storage, the reason being cloud offers rich resources and IoT devices are resource constrained. When IoT devices try accessing cloud for their storage and other needs, the security aspect is something which needs to be in sighted. Currently for cloud, ABE for access control is being popularly used by many applications, but when we try using the same technique for IoT applications there are issues which need to be looked into. This chapter looks at the possible problems that arise when we try using ABE for cloud based IoT applications and the possible solutions.
