This chapter explores two different research lines. One is a series of projects carried out in close collaboration with firefighters that resulted in a technically innovative solution. It allows some of the conditions of practice-based research to be examined in a safety-critical domain. The other research line—built around the idea of developing a technology that supports the coordination of professionals and volunteers operating in critical settings—offers the opportunity to learn about the impact of technology choices on the sustainability of a design solution. It also highlights the challenges involved in moving in a highly regulated field characterized by heterogeneous interests.
