Technical note for the ForIT R-package (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.5790157, gitlab.com/NuoroForestrySchool/forit). ForIT stores all the volume and biomass equations (Tabacchi et al., 2011) that have been developed to process the second Italian national forest inventory, reference year 2005. The functions are calibrated for most of the forest species present in Italy and estimate the main attributes of the following aboveground components of trees: (i) volume of stem and large branches; (ii) biomass of stem and large branches; (iii) biomass of other branches; (iv) biomass of the stump; (v) total aboveground tree biomass. Given the importance of the source, these equations have become an focal point of reference for foresters and professionals who need to estimate the volume or biomass of trees in Italy. Nonetheless, the operational use of these functions is limited since they were not available within computer procedures that the user could easily access. Moreover, the source actually provides detailed information concerning the quantification of the errors associated with volume or biomass estimates. This part of the information has been absolutely disregarded not having it available within a convenient computer procedure. Having coded in the ForIT R-package all the functions for estimating the value of the attributes as well as the associated error, the paper develops, with examples, the main use cases for which the package has been developed.
