Section Meeting
SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal · 2004
The topic for the meeting on March 9, was "Broadband Opportunities over High-speed Mobility Networks."Presenter, Jack Kozik, Bell Labs, began by outlining the realities of broadband deliveries in the current mobility network infrastructure.Although many service providers are touting video services, network traffic conditions often allow less than 144 kbits/sec transmission.Kozik offered many intriguing examples of applications that now deliver far fewer than 30 frames/sec, but reveal the breadth of business and consumer opportunities when subscriber rates will consistently exceed 2 Mbits/sec.Several charts helped explain spread-spectrum engineering and the dynamic challenges for statistical multiplexing of voice and data.Kozik emphasized the engineering trade-offs among systems' design, software interoperability, network management, market deployment, and revenue.Several standards bodies have been key in advancing open architecture solutions.Among them are the IETF, SMPTE, and 3GPP.The differences among the prevailing global mobility systems, such as GSM, UMTS, CDMA, and 1EVDO suggest that although 3G is solidly entrenched in East Asia, it may be several years before network build-out and market demand bring true broadband mobility to the U.S.Kozik concluded that high-speed mobility services are already a $200 billion business; the technology already exists to support full-motion, standard-resolution video; and broadcast TV content is already bypassing the traditional RF and cable delivery systems. Two dozen members and guests attended the meeting, which was hosted by CLTV, who provided a premeeting tour of the facilities.Prior to the meeting, Section Managers also met to discuss the success of the recently hosted AMI conference.
