Store Organisation

Derrick Morris, Roland N. Ibbett · 1979

During the running of a process in the MU5 Processor, the information referred to by the virtual addresses it generates may exist in any one of the several real stores which make up the MU5 storage hierarchy (figure 6.1). Thus most operand requests are satisfied by the high-speed integrated circuit stores contained within the Processor, but some require access to a higher level of storage. Interactions between the Processor and the Local Store are organised entirely by hardware, but interactions between other levels in the hierarchy involve a combination of both hardware and software techniques. The software aspects of the system are discussed in Chapter 9, while in this chapter we consider the hardware techniques.
