GIS internal particles have become the main factor affecting the safe and stable operation of GIS, but the development and evolution mechanism of GIS internal particle defects is still unclear. In this paper, by building a 220kV GIS test platform, using the UHF local discharge detection method to study the development of GIS internal free particle defects evolution mechanism, the test found that when the voltage rises to the starting discharge voltage, free metal free particles produce continuous partial discharge, but when the voltage level for a period of time, the number of partial discharge will gradually reduce until a more stable state. When the metal particles enter the low field strength region, the electric field strength is not strong enough to make the free metal particles continue to move, and if the electric field distortion caused by it is still able to maintain the generation of partial discharge, the free metal particles will be stabilized.
