This paper describes the architecture of homogeneous and heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (WSN), as well as their applications. To extend the lifespan of WSNs, the energy-efficient dynamic topology approach was developed. The effectiveness of a novel dynamic modified probability-based approach for extending network lifetime by locating the most energy-efficient cluster head (CH) nodes. The proposed method demonstrates the differences in performance between homogeneous and heterogeneous WSN. The mathematical modelling, simulation implementation, and results generation achieved by using MATLAB-2017b. The comparative results analysis of the proposed work is presented in terms of network lifetime based on FND and LND, energy consumption, alive/dead sensor nodes (SNs). The ADV-LEACH2 (HETRO) outperforms the ADV-LEACH2 (HOMO) because of the existence of advanced SNs with higher energy levels in the WSN. By 16.5 percent, the ADV-LEACH2 (HETRO) method outperformed ADV-LEACH1 (HETRO). ADV-LEACH2 (HETRO) approach performed 16.5% better than ADV-LEACH1 (HETRO).
