Sequence architecture

J. W. Mulholland · The Leading Edge · 1998

This is the second of a series on sequence stratigraphy written to be informative without being overly technical. The first article (TLE, January 1998) discussed the origin of this new paradigm and some basic definitions. This article will focus more closely on the components of a typical sequence and their arrangement, or architecture, to form a recognizable unit. In order to understand this architecture, it is necessary to understand the processes that operated to create the segments of a sequence. It is also helpful to understand what the geologist looks for as keys to an interpretation.
