Image-based rendering (IBR) is an effective technique for rendering novel views of a scene from a set of multi-view images. This chapter presents the state of the art in plenoptic sampling theory. It covers the variety of plenoptic parameterizations that occur by restricting aspects of the scene and viewing position. In particular, the chapter focuses on two common plenoptic representations: the light field and the surface light field. It also covers the sampling of the plenoptic function assuming a uniform distribution of the cameras. In this context, the sampling analysis is approached in a Fourier framework. Following this, the chapter discusses the state of the art in adaptive sampling of the plenoptic function, known as adaptive plenoptic sampling. Finally, the chapter presents an outlook on possible future directions in IBR and plenoptic sampling.
