Research in the Quantum Communications and Networking Project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) focuses on developing quantum devices and studying them for use in quantum communications and quantum networking applications. In this paper, we review parts of our research on quantum communications devices and introduce the case for the development of metrology tools and testbeds for quantum network systems.
