In the present dynamic era of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, there are millions of devices that are functionally connected over the internet to perform a multitude of assigned tasks. Many of Linux based IoT devices needs to be updated at different levels, over time. Since these IoT devices are remotely deployed, automated over-the-air (OTA) updates becomes an obvious choice over manual updates. There are many OTA update frameworks available for different architectures but none of them is supported and verified on RISCV architecture. In this paper, a specific open-source and flexible OTA update framework, SWUpdate, has been selected and different types of OTA updates have been successfully implemented to the RISCV architecture-based target devices. It have been observed that SWUpdate performs all type of OTA updates reasonabally well but still lacks many additional useful features for commercial deployment when compared with its counterparts such as Mender, which is not fuly open source and need licensing fees.
